Gameplay[edit]
Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy is a collection of remasters of the first three games in the Crash Bandicoot series; Crash Bandicoot, Cortex Strikes Back and Warped. Each game features Crash Bandicoot traversing various levels in order to stop Doctor Neo Cortex from taking over the world. Like in the original games, Crash uses spinning and jumping techniques to defeat enemies, smash crates, and collect items such as Wumpa Fruits, extra lives and protective Aku Aku masks. The trilogy adds new features across all three games, including unified checkpoints, pause menus and save systems, including both manual and automatic saving, time trials, which were first introduced in Warped, and the ability to play most levels in each game as Crash's sister, Coco.[1] It also features remastered audio and cutscenes, including new recordings of the games' dialogue given by the franchise's more recent voice actors.[2]

Hiatus[edit]
Prior to the announcement of the N. Sane Trilogy, the Crash Bandicoot franchise had been on hiatus for approximately six years, the last entry being released in 2010. In a Kotaku interview with then-Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg regarding the future of the Crash series, he said, 'I don't have anything official to announce, but I can speak as an individual, I love Crash Bandicoot. Those were some of my favorite video games growing up. And I would love to find a way to bring him back, if we could.'[3] Andy Gavin, cofounder of Naughty Dog and co-creator of Crash Bandicoot, has said that he would love to see an HD version of the marsupial's first four games, or even a full blown reboot.[4] Fellow co-creator Jason Rubin, said he was hopeful that Activision would 'Bring Crash back to their glory days and that the character is still very dear to fans between 18–49 years'.[5] A new design of Crash Bandicoot was spotted in a photo from the Vicarious Visions's studio, raising rumors that a new game might have been in development,[6] though this was later confirmed to be concept art from a previously cancelled Crash game.[7]
In June 2013, Andy Gavin suggested ways to revitalize the series. 'Crash needs a total reboot. There's an opportunity to reset the history, and go back to his creation story and the original conflict with Cortex. In that context, you could reprise classic Crash 1 and 2's settings and villains. It would make sense to use a more modern, free-roaming style. I would concentrate on Looney Tunes-esque animation and really addictive action. That's what we did with the original Crash, and there's no reason it couldn't be done today. Given the current Crash games, people forget that he was once cool. Our Crash had a certain whimsical edge to him. Sure, it was goofy – but it wasn't dumb.'.[8]
In November 2013, rumors began circulating that Sony bought the rights to the franchise from Activision.[9] Speculations were fueled after the release of PlayStation 4's #4ThePlayers campaign, featuring a road sign with a silhouette of Crash, and an arrow pointing towards the orange diamond logo of Sony Computer Entertainment.[10][11] Publications such as IGN reported that Crash was removed from Activision's official website,[12] which seemed to add further credibility to the rumor. However, shortly after, this was proven false, as an Activision representative told Game Informer that '[Activision still owns] Crash Bandicoot and we continue to explore ways in which we could bring the beloved series to life.'[13]
In July 2014, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House revealed that reviving the Crash Bandicoot series was something that they have been thinking about, saying 'It's never off the table.', and Naughty Dog also revealed through an IGN interview the possibility that they may revive both series of Crash Bandicoot as well as Jak & Daxter.[14] In January 2015, however, Naughty Dog's Josh Scherr stated in an interview with Game Informer that Naughty Dog did not miss working on either series and had no intention of bringing them back to life.[15] Despite this, Naughty Dog co-president Evan Wells stated that the company would love to return to Crash Bandicoot but did not see it as viable.[16]
On December 5, 2015, rumors of a possible Crash Bandicoot revival flared up once again when SIE Worldwide Studios Chairman and SCEA President and CEO Shawn Layden appeared on stage at PlayStation Experience wearing a PS1-themed Crash Bandicoot shirt. Layden, however, never mentioned the series at the event, and has yet to address why he wore the shirt.[17] In February 2016, a new Crash game appeared to be on the horizon when NECA Director of Product Development Randy Falk stated in an interview with YouTuber Pixel Dan that the company had 'a lot of stuff going on with Sony' before mentioning that 'I see they're bringing Crash Bandicoot back, so there's some great stuff there.'[18] Shortly after, however, an NECA representative clarified with GameSpot that Falk's comments were misunderstood, and that Falk was only speaking of a hypothetical return of the series after seeing a fan-made Crash art just before being interviewed.[19]
Naughty Dog's 2016 game Uncharted 4: A Thief's End features protagonist Nathan Drake playing a boulder-chase level from the original Crash Bandicoot, further adding to the rumor that a return for the series was imminent.[20] Speculation was fueled even further when it was discovered that Activision's legal ownership of the franchise was not mentioned anywhere in the game's credits, sparking rumors that the franchise had been purchased by Sony.[21]Lex Lang, the then-most-recent voice actor of Dr. Neo Cortex, also hinted on Facebook that he was asked to reprise his role.[22] However, shortly after, the rumors and speculations were derailed when Sony VP of Publisher Relations Adam Boyes confirmed on Twitter that Activision still owns the rights to the franchise,[23] and Lang clarified that he was not teasing a Crash Bandicoot revival, and that he had not been asked to return to the series, but would be open to potentially lending his voice to a new Crash game in the future.[24]
Announcement and Release[edit]
At E3 2016 during Sony's press conference, after years of rumors, speculation and outcry, Crash Bandicoot finally made his official return when it was announced, in a timed partnership with Activision, that the first three games from the original PlayStation would be remade from the ground up. Crash would also be a playable character in Activision's then-upcoming toys-to-life game Skylanders: Imaginators, released on October 16, 2016. It was announced at Gamescom 2016 that Dr. Neo Cortex would also be playable in Imaginators, and that a Crash-themed level was created for the game, 'Thumpin' Wumpa Islands'.[25] The remakes of the original trilogy were developed by Vicarious Visions under the title Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and were released for PlayStation 4 on June 30, 2017.[26][27] Vicarious Visions has also expressed interest in making a new Crash Bandicoot game following the N. Sane Trilogy's release.[28] Vicarious Visions coined the term 'Remaster Plus' to describe the collection, as they did not fully remake the original games, but rather used Naughty Dog's original level geometry to rebuild the gameplay from scratch. As the levels were coming together, they also added their own art, animation, and audio.[2] Almost none of the source codes for the original games were available to the developers, as the game engines were specially written for the original PlayStation and Vicarious Visions could not find a way to use it on more powerful systems.[29] Sony and Naughty Dog were able to provide various polygon meshes from the original, although many important elements from these were missing and the team found that 'they were compressed in some wacky format that we had to decode'. Vicarious Visions looked at various internet communities to make sure they had essences of the games captured.[29] The team also had some fans test the game and give notes about it compared to the originals.[29] In April 2017, there was a contest for fans to submit ideas for idle animations for the character, with the winners announced the following month.[30][31]
Two additional levels were added as post-launch downloadable content: Stormy Ascent, a level originally designed for the first game but was cut due to its difficulty, and Future Tense, a completely new level created by Vicarious Visions for the third game. After one year of timed exclusivity, the N. Sane Trilogy was ported to Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows on June 29, 2018 with assistance from Skylanders developer Toys for Bob.[32][33] The Switch port in particular was not originally intended until a lone engineer at Vicarious Visions successfully ported the game's first level to the platform, proving it was feasible to port the entire trilogy.[34]Sega published the Switch version in Japan on October 18, 2018, while Sony Interactive Entertainment published the PS4 version in that country.[35]

Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy received 'generally favorable' reviews from critics, according to review aggregatorMetacritic.[36]
Sales[edit]
In the United Kingdom, the N. Sane Trilogy was the best-selling game in the week of release, a first for the Crash Bandicoot series, and became the best-selling exclusive launch of the year, beating the record previously held by Horizon Zero Dawn. Its release also saw the biggest launch of a game in the first half of 2017, behind Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands.[48] It was also the second-best-selling game in its first month in the US.[49] The game had sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide by September 2017.[50] By February 2019, that number had risen to over 10 million.[51]
Accolades[edit]
The game won the award for 'Best Remake/Remaster' at IGN's 2017 awards,[52] while the readers and staff of Game Informer voted it as the 'Best Remastered Action' and 'Best Remastered/Remade' game in theirs.[53][54] It was also nominated for the Tappan Zee Bridge Award for 'Best Remake' at the New York Game Awards 2018,[55] and won the award for 'Game, Classic Revival' at the National Academy of Video Game Trade Reviewers Awards, whereas its other nomination was for the 'Original Light Mix Score, Franchise' category.[56][57] It was also nominated for 'People's Choice' at the Italian Video Game Awards.[58]

Everyone loves secret levels, and if you're looking to enjoy everything that Crash Bandicoot 1 has to offer in the N. Sane Trilogy, you'll want to unlock bonus stages with these key collectibles.
'Key Locations' is kind of a misnomer. Yes, there are special keys you'll need to find, but what you're really going after are the Neo Cortex Bonus Stages.
There are only two in the game, and you'll need to find three particularly tough-to-find N. Cortex face pick-ups to unlock the teleporters in each level. Even the teleporters are tough to find (in one level!) so we've thrown together a quick guide to explain this one extra aspect of the game.
Check out more N. Sane Trilogy guides on The Escapist:There are two keys in Crash 1. To get them, you'll need to complete two Neo Cortex bonus stages -- just like any other bonus stage, unlocking the teleporter requires collecting three faces. In this case, you're looking for three Neo Cortex faces.
Sunset Vista:- N. Cortex #1: The first Cortex face isn't available until you're on the third 'floor' of this level. When you reach the top of the ruin and can see the sunset background, there's a small interior room with white crate outlines. Defeat the lizard and enter the ruin, smash all the crates to find the first Cortex face.
- N. Cortex #2: Ahead, you'll reach a small safe space between two pushing-block walls. Hop on the crates to reach the top of the second pushing-block walls where there's an extra life and an N. Cortex face.
- N. Cortex #3: The last face is near the N. Cortex teleporter. To the left, hop into the hallway with the extra life and move left to enter an interior background room. Hop around to collect the hidden Cortex face back there.
Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy Pc Serial Key Codes
With all three faces, you'll unlock the Cortex bonus stage. Complete it to earn the first (of two!) keys.
Jaws of Darkness:
- N. Cortex #1: After riding the tiny pair of platforms, jump through the spike traps and the fire to reach a stack of crates with a TNT crate on top. Break the bottom crate to find the first N. Cortex.
- N. Cortex #2: Ahead, you'll eventually reach a stone platform corner after jumping through spears, with a fire on the left, right after a snake. In this corner, smash the '?' crate to get your second Cortex.
- N. Cortex #3: Just to the left, when you reach a platform with a void to the left, the only path forward looks like the straight ahead. Not so, walk left to make invisible platforms appear -- the Wumpa Fruit tips you off -- this path leads to the N. Cortex teleporter and the last face in a crate.
And that's both keys! With these keys, you'll unlock some bonus levels to enjoy. Not a bad reward, huh?
